Tenseless constructions in a tensed language: temporal interpretation of the Korean -ko construction

چکیده
1. Introduction This paper investigates the nature of the syntax-semantics interface through a study of the temporal interpretation of the Korean-ko construction. In Korean, matrix clauses must be tensed whereas the non-final conjunct of the-ko construction can be untensed. For example, (1) must be realized either with present (PRES) or past (PAST) tense morpheme whereas the past tense on the verb yel 'open' in the non-final conjunct in (2) is optional.

Tokens, Dates And Tenseless Truth Conditions
There are two extant versions of the new tenseless theory of time: the date version and the token-reflexive version. I ask whether they are equivalent, and if not, which of them is to be preferred. I argue that they are not equivalent, that the date version is unsatisfactory, and that the token-reflexive version is correct. I defend the tokenreflexive version against a string of objections from...
متن کاملThe Temporal Interpretation of the Korean –ko Construction: Aktionsart and Discourse Context
The temporal interpretation of the Korean –ko construction has been given analyses that assume a construction-specific mechanism (e.g. Yoon 1993, 1994, 1997; Chung 2001, 2005). This paper presents several empirical arguments against these analyses, and develops a compositional analysis. The main point of this paper is that the temporal interpretation of the –ko construction can be accounted for...

متن کاملL. A. Paul Truth Conditions of Tensed Sentence Types
Quentin Smith has argued that the new tenseless theory of time is faced with insurmountable problems and should be abandoned in favour of the tensed theory of time. Smith’s main argument attacks the fundamental premise of the tenseless theory: that tenseless truth conditions for tokens of tensed sentences adequately capture the meaning of tensed sentences. His position is that tenseless truth c...
متن کاملTime with and without tense
How is temporal information conveyed in language? In languages with tense it is direct; without tense, inference allows the receiver to arrive at an indirect temporal interpretation. I will discuss tensed and tenseless languages, proposing a unified approach that applies to both. I show that a few very general pragmatic principles account for temporal interpretation, direct and indirect. I assu...
